Summer 11 - Medieval Week Mingle

Okay, so maybe Norrhamn isn't as big of a tourist attraction as Gotland. Maybe it's not home to the best preserved medieval city in Scandinavia, complete with ring wall and twelve church ruins. Maybe it can't even compete with the near Mediterranean climate that Visby has during those late summer weeks, but Norrhamn knows one thing — how to do a lot with very little.

Welcome to Medieval Week - Lite Edition

The beach on the eastern side of the Island has been decked out with as many wooden tables and benches as is logistically possible, while still leaving some areas free for games and dancing. There's a wooden stage set up close to the woods, and a couple of racks of lovingly sponsored time-appropriate clothes available for those who want to blend in with the times.

Entertainment: To set the mood, management hired a band of Baltic musicians that will take up the stage for most of the day, playing well into the night. There's also dumb-ass jester performances from time to time, usually while the musicians are taking a break. The biggest event however is the fire show that starts up as soon as night falls right by the edge of the water.

Games: There's not quite enough room for an actual jousting tournament (my heart breaks) but there's a whole heap of stick horses for those eager to make their own. You're also welcome to take part in any number of feats of skill and strength, like rövkrok, armwrestling, or pillow-fighting on a slick wooden log. For those of a more intellectual persuasion, there's also a number of medieval board- card- and dicegames available.

Food and drink: Oh man. Oh man? There's so much food. Like, if some of the early guests thought that first welcome party had food in abundance, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Between the whole spit-roasted wild boar, through the pea soup and pork, the saffron-pancakes with dewberry jam, the roasted root vegetables (no potatoes in sight), the smoked pike-perch, the freshly baked spiced breads, the apple- hazelnut bread pudding, no one will go home hungry*. Wash it down with flagons of mead, spiced wine, beer brewed on honey and hops, or perfectly alcohol-free elderberry or lingonberry lemonades.

*There is of course thirium alternatives for the android population.

You— [Wait. 'Going on fifteen', so...he's fourteen?] Huh? You don't sound that young. [What fourteen-year-old uses words like 'metabolism' or 'ravenous'?] I had the impression that you were a bit older than that. [She'd been guessing at sixteen, thinking that maybe he was just a little short for his age.]

I know I don't really look it, but I'm seventeen, myself. [She looks slightly younger than that, and wouldn't be surprised if she were assumed to be fifteen or sixteen herself. It's Elia's fault, she's sure of it.]

Gotta say, though, this stuff is great. [She says as she starts taking some more for herself. It's honestly a wonder that neither of them have been turned away yet.]

I'm not really your average kid, I guess.

[He says that with a bit of a knowing smile, though there's some buried melancholy buried beneath the surface of it. Still, that sort of look doesn't last long, as he quirks an eyebrow at her. To be honest, she hadn't looked any older than Quinn, so he'd pictured her about sixteen, but he kept any comment about that to himself for now.]

Isn't it? I dunno what they did to make all of this, but I can't believe how good it all is. And those berry lemonades are way better than I expected. Kinda... tart, I guess, but just right.

They probably had some people hunting out in the woods and then prepping it ahead of this whole thing, if I had to guess. [It's the most reasonable answer she can think of as far as the meats go.] Either that or it was brought in from someplace else, like...not the island.

What did you expect, anyway? [She's saying nothing of her own expectations yet, mostly because she really didn't actually have any; food is food, really, and if she didn't like it she'd probably still have been back and forth here, even if it wasn't as often.]

Maybe it's both? ...Wonder if there are more boars on the island...?

[No, he's not actually considering going hunting himself. He is simply pondering the idea of what other wildlife might be out in those woods. GV hadn't gotten to the idea of going exploring for cataloguing wildlife yet.]

I'm really not sure what I expected. ...I never have been to a festival like this before, much less with stuff that's clearly homemade. Maybe I expected them to be sweeter than they are, but... I think it's a lot better this way.

Maybe. [April's now vaguely considering looking into hunting, herself, as she has done so before back home. But, because she'd left everything behind except for some extra clothing, she doesn't have any of the stuff that she would be using for it.

She also doesn't know if she'd be allowed to do so in the first place, and doesn't particularly feel like going and asking anyone about it yet.]

The last one I'd been to was ten years back, so I wasn't too sure what to really expect here, either. Seeing this here kinda makes me miss the— [—old days, where she didn't have to worry about if it would be okay to show her face anywhere?] ...never mind.

[Gunvolt tilted his head just ever so slightly when she backed off her statement. Despite some curiosity at the reaction, he chose not to pry. If she didn't want to talk about it, it wasn't any of his business. Instead, he took a sip from his lemonade... quickly thinking of something to say to move on.]

Heard the fire show might be something to see, though. You want to see that later?

[She might talk about things eventually, but this isn't the time for it.]

Eh, sure, what could it hurt.
